How to prepare for APPSC Group 2 Mains Exam How to get a Group -2 Services job?
APPSC has released the Group 2 Screening Test 2017 results. A total of 49100 candidates were selected to the Group 2 Mains exam. Approximately 50 candidates will be competing for each Group -2 post. Group 2 Mains exam is scheduled on May 20 and 21.
In this post, we are giving the preparation tips, strategy and study plan for clearing the Group -2 Mains exam.
In the APPSC Group -2 Mains Examination, there are three papers:
- Paper -1: Current Affairs, General Studies, Aptitude and Reasoning
- Paper -2: Andhra Pradesh History, Indian Polity and Constitution
- Paper -3: Indian Economy and Andhra Pradesh Economy
Each paper carries 150 marks. Thus, there are a total 450 marks in the Exam. There is no interview in APPSC Group -2 exam. The marks obtained the Screening test are also not considered for the final selection. Hence, it is expected that final cut-off will be around 350+ for general category candidates.
Now, we will discuss the study plan for each paper.
We can broadly divide the Paper -1 syllabus into following categories:
- Current Affairs
- General Science
- Modern Indian History
- Indian Geography
- AP Geography
- Disaster Management
- Environment and Sustainable Development
- Quantitative Aptitude and Reasoning
- Bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh
Other topics in Paper -1 like Constitutional Issues, e-Governance, Indian Economy since independence can be covered under Paper -2 and Paper -3 of the exam.
Now, we will discuss the strategy for each topic in Paper -1.
1. Current Affairs:
There will be around 20-30 questions asked for the current affairs. It include events and news of Regional, National and International importance.It is the most important topics in the paper as questions in this topic are related with other subjects like Science, Economics and Polity.
How to Prepare for Current Affairs?
- One must essentially read one newspaper daily. Telugu Medium candidates can read Eenaadu or Sakshi. English medium candidates can read Times of India or The Hindu.
- Reading any Telugu newspaper is must for all candidates as events related to State importance are covered in Telugu newspapers only.
- Candidates must prepare daily notes from newspapers. You must note down important news items daily.
- It is better to maintain a diary with daily notes, so that you can revise and refer the notes very easily.
Apart from reading newspapers, you must also follow any other current affairs magazines. We have prepared monthly current affairs, daily current affairs and important events in 2016 in Telugu. 2. General Science:
In this topic, focus must be on current affairs related information like ISRO Satellite launches, Missile Launches, Mangalyaan, Chandrayaan Programmes, Latest Prizes and other scientific developments etc, .
However, candidates must also read AP SCERT Text books on General Science, Biology, Physics and Chemistry from Class 6 to Class 10 to get basic understanding of this subject. Reading these textbooks will suffice in answering subject-based questions in the exam.

There will be some 10-15 questions only from this topic. Hence, this topic should be given least priority compared with other subjects.
3. Modern Indian History:
Candidate must focus mainly on the Modern Indian History and Indian National Movement for the Mains exam. Modern Indian history will cover events from the advent of British in India, which is after 1600 AD.

It includes both the Indian and Andhra Pradesh Geography. You must study the important features of Indian Geography like, mountains, rivers, plateaus, monsoon, industries, soils, forests, crops etc. For Indian Geography NCERT Books will suffice. Moreover, 2011 census and its important aspects like Child Sex Ratio, Female Ratio, Literacy Ratio, Urban-Rural Population Ratio, etc for overall country, Top -5 and Bottom -5 states in the country and statistics for the state of Andhra Pradesh must be remembered.
5. Environment and Disaster Management
This topic includes various types of pollution, sustainable development, environmental degradation like soil erosion, global warming, climate change, biodiversity and environmental protection measures. Moreover, this topic has more scope for current affairs related questions. Hence, candidates must focus on Environmental issues like important events and conferences, Sustainable Development Goals, UNFCCC meetings while preparing for current affairs.

Another important topic here is the Disaster Management. Reading CBSE text books on Disaster management will cover all aspects of disaster management. Current Affairs related information of Disaster Management like Sendai Framework, National Disaster Management Plan must be prepared by the candidates.
6. Quantitative Aptitude and Reasoning
This topic is the most mark fetching topic in the paper, especially for Maths and Science background students. However, Arts background students can also fetch maximum marks in this section with good preparation.
It includes data interpretation, logical reasoning, data analysis etc. Practicing R S Agarwal’s books on Quantitative Aptitude & Data Interpretation, Logical Reasoning, Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning and General English will suffice for the exam.
7. Issues Related to AP Bifurcation
This is a current affairs related topic. While preparing for current affairs, this aspect also must be covered by the candidates. Moreover, candidates must note down the important points of AP Reorganisation Act, 2014. There are two sections in Paper -2. Each section carries 75 marks.
- Andhra Pradesh History and Culture
- Indian Polity and Constitution
1. Andhra Pradesh History and Culture:

This subject includes topics like basic features of Governance in the country, Centre-state relations etc. The candidates are advised to have basic understanding of this subject. Candidates must prepare important features of Indian Constitution, Government programs and policies. Candidates must also prepare for important Andhra Pradesh Government’s programs and policies.

1. Indian Economy
This subject includes topics like Planning in Indian Economy, Economic issues and Economic reforms. Questions in Indian Economy will be of basic nature. However, there is more scope for current affairs related questions in this topic. Hence, candidates must prepare for Indian Economic issues and events while preparing for current affairs. Moreover, candidate must prepare the latest statistics on various aspects like Poverty, Unemployment, Growth rate, 2011 Census related aspects like Child Sex Ratio, Female Ratio, Illiteracy etc, as direct questions from these topics can be asked in the exam.

2. Andhra Pradesh Economy:
In AP Economy, candidates must focus on Budget 2017-18 and Socio-Economic Survey 2016-17 of Andhra Pradesh Government. Important statistics like GSDP growth rate, Sector-wise GSDP share, Growth rate of Agriculture, Industries and Services Sector, unemployment rate, poverty etc.
In AP Budget, importan allocations made to sectors like Irrigation, Welfare etc must be remembered.
